TARGETING EXTRACELLULAR MATRIX REMODELLING IN CUTANEOUS WOUNDS TO PROMOTE BETTER HEALING

A Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network supported by Horizon Europe.

| ABOUT THE PROJECT

REMOD-HEALING is a doctoral network funding early-stage researchers through collaborative, interdisciplinary, and innovative research projects. It is supported by a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action, a prestigious program under Horizon Europe.

We have gathered a team of 14 European and Latin American partners to provide excellent training to 12 doctoral candidates and generate breakthrough research in the connected fields of wound healing, extracellular matrix and proteolysis.

Around 4-6% of the European adult population has a wound requiring a medical intervention each year, of which 40% suffer from acute wounds, 48% from chronic wounds and 12% from other wounds. Our innovative approach will be to analyse, model and target the aberrant modifications of extracellular matrix proteins induced by proteolytic enzymes in various healing disorders (chronic ulcers, epidermolysis bullosa, snake bite-induced dermonecrosis) with the hypothesis that the quality of the extracellular matrix shaped by proteases dictates the quality of tissue regeneration.

| OUR RESEARCH

Wound healing is a physiological process leading to the restoration of the skin barrier integrity after injury. In the REMOD-HEALING project, we tackle the burden of pathological wounds by exploiting the huge reservoir of therapeutic targets and biomarkers associated with extracellular matrix (ECM) remodelling in cutaneous wounds.

| EXPECTED OUTCOMES

Our innovative wound care solutions will include a range of scientific and technological advances designed to improve diagnosis, treatment, and understanding of wound healing mechanisms.

New biomarker assays and protease probes to predict wound healing progression or detect infection.

Novel protease inhibitors to extend therapeutic solutions in wound management.

A wound-on-a-chip model to accelerate research and reduce animal testing.

| CONSORTIUM

A European-Latin American collaboration between academic institutions and industry partners advancing wound healing research.

| TRAINING & DOCTORAL CANDIDATES

REMOD-HEALING trains the next generation of scientists in wound healing, extracellular matrix and proteolysis research, equipping them to tackle today’s most urgent medical and scientific challenges. Through outstanding research excellence, international mobility and interdisciplinary collaboration, 12 doctoral candidates will acquire cutting-edge skills to translate scientific discoveries into clinical applications.
